Chlorine and Smells
Over the years chlorine has been added to many products to combat foot smells, by itself it is a reactive chemical that has a very strong and unagreeable suffocating smell, it is a potent oxidant and commonly used in bleaching and disinfecting. Do not purchase undiluted chlorine, as this will cause fatal burns. Disinfecting your feet with a chlorine based solution, should be one of the weapons in your armoury against foot odour, a chlorine based product will only disinfect your feet, so you must also attend to the other causes that support ongoing foot odour, if you do not pay attention to the other factors, the odour that the chlorine based product has temporarily stopped will return with a vengeance!(Blackistons 1979)
Activated Charcoal Charcoal tablets are a well known remedy sold in health shops, this was previously used for flatulence and imbalances of the digestive system. Activated charcoal also called activated carbon is a general term which covers carbon material mostly derived from charcoal, it has an exceptionally high surface area, which is why it can absorb large amounts of odour. The only problem with activated charcoal, is that it is primarily carbon, and if used by itself will turn everything it touches from shades of gray to black, this is why it is packaged into items such as shoe soles, lining and even socks, for it to be effective without tainting everything it touches.
This is one of the best products on the market to absorb sweat in our shoes, putting inserts in shoes will mask part of the problem, however inner soles do not kill bacteria, so this means, that we cannot forget the other rituals to support long term hygiene of foot care. Dr Scholl’s charcoal shoe inserts are available in most of their outlets and pharmacies.(Lindlahr M.D 1983) |
